MIKE HERMANN
RAY SMITH
I started my dental technology career in 1979 after graduating Eli Whitney
Tech in Hamden, Ct. where I achieved the honor of earning the Proficiency In
Skills award. Later that year I was hired at Advanced Porcelain Lab in
Bridgeport, Connecticut where I had the opportunity to learn the industry's latest
techniques. It was invaluable on the job training, and after five years, I
was ready to open my own business. Westport Dental Techniques was born from
the dream to operate my own dental lab where I could have complete control
over every restoration created there. In 1989, Ray and I joined forces and moved our little lab to Nederland, Co.
three years later. We are inspired on a daily basis by the amazing beauty all around us.
I began my career at The New York School of Mechanical Dentistry in 1972.
After graduating, I landed a great job at a small lab in Connecticut
(Connecticut Dental) where I was encouraged to learn all aspects of the
trade. Over the next five years, I honed my skills and became friends with an
incredible ceramist/artist, Taki Nishihata, whose passion for his work was
really refreshing . He opened my eyes to a side of the business that I
didn't know existed, high aesthetics. Eventually Taki opened his own lab and
asked me to work for him. I learned dental ceramics from him and was
encouraged to take courses with Industry leaders, Kuwata, Tanaka, and Willy Geller to
name a few. I was able to use newly learned techniques in my daily work. In
1989 I met and joined forces with Mike Hermann and in 1992 moved the lab to
Nederland, Co.
The industry has changed a lot since the 70's but our mission has remained
the same, the best fitting restorations and highest aesthetics possible.
